Start your Journey in Italy

PortaleItaly provides services for Italian citizenship, visas, and connecting with your heritage.

The Italian citizenship process

The pathway to Italian citizenship through your heritage, otherwise known as Jure Sanguinis, can be complex and bureaucratic, but it does not need to be. PortaleItaly can take some – or all – of this complexity off your hands. We are prepared to work with any sized family and complexity of case, whether you are looking as an individual, a family, or even on behalf of someone else.
Phase 1

Document Collection Phase

Assembling, certifying, and translating all documentation to prove your right to citizenship is required under Italian law. This can be complex, and often requires tracking down hard-to-find birth, death, marriage, and divorce documentation, and more. Thankfully, PortaleItaly makes this process seamless and easy.

We’ll take complete ownership of the document process across both Italy and America/Canada/UK. This includes retrieving certified copies of vital records, managing apostilles, ensuring consistency and accuracy across all documents, and handling certified translations. Our team liaises directly with the necessary government offices and registries to keep everything moving forward smoothly, so you can stay focused while we handle the details.

We will handle:
• Collecting the American and Canadian documents
• Collecting the Italian documents
• Translating all the non-Italian documents

With our Assisted service, you collect the American documents, after we clearly advise you on which records are needed, how to request them, and in which format. We guide you step by step throughout the process.

At the same time, we handle all Italian documentation, source records from Italian archives, facilitate the apostillization of US and Canadian documents and translate all non-Italian documents into Italian, ensuring everything meets Court standards while helping you optimize costs.

We handle:
• Collecting the Italian documents
• Securing the Apostilles
• Translating all non-Italian documents

You are responsible for:
• Collecting the American documents

We’ll manage the Italian side of your case and guide you step by step on the foreign documentation, while you remain in control of collecting the records outside Italy. This option is ideal if you want professional direction without the cost of full document handling abroad.

We handle:
• Advising you on which U.S./foreign documents are required, where to request them, and the exact specifications they must meet
• Providing clear instructions on formats, certifications, and timelines for foreign records
• Collecting all required Italian documents directly in Italy (from comuni and civil registries)

You are responsible for:
• Requesting and collecting the U.S./foreign documents from the appropriate authorities
• Obtaining the apostilles on all non-Italian documents
• Selecting and coordinating the translations for non-Italian documents

This structure allows you to reduce costs while ensuring that the Italian documentation and the overall strategy of your case are handled professionally by PortaleItaly.

Phase 2

Submission Phase

Once your documents are prepared, there are various methods for processing your application, depending on the complexity of your case and how quickly you need your citizenship.

Court Submission Phase

In this phase, PortaleItaly formally files your citizenship case before the Italian Court. Once all documents are complete and compliant, our legal team prepares the petition, submits it on your behalf, and represents you throughout the judicial process in Italy.

We facilitate:

• Preparing the legal filing and assembling the complete case dossier
• Submitting the case to the competent Italian court
• Providing legal representation through our licensed Italian attorneys
• Managing court communications, procedural updates, and timelines
• Informing you of each milestone until a final judgment is issued

This phase requires no travel to Italy and no court appearance on your part. You will simply receive updates while we handle the legal process from start to finish.

Comune Submission Option

With this option, PortaleItaly assists you in applying for Italian citizenship directly through an Italian municipality (Comune) while you reside in Italy for the duration of the process. This administrative route requires temporary relocation and active participation, with our team providing structured, hands-on support on the ground.

You must plan to remain physically in Italy for approximately 4–6 months, depending on the Comune and the pace of the local administration.

We are in charge of:

• Preparing your application file and ensuring all documents are compliant for Comune submission
• Scheduling and guiding you through five dedicated hand-holding meetings, assisting you in person or step by step with key appointments
• Supporting procedures at the Comune (registry office), Questura (police station), Poste Italiane (post office), and other required offices
• Monitoring your application status and coordinating with local authorities
• Assisting you until the Comune issues its final decision

During the process, local police may conduct one unannounced inspection to verify your actual residence at the declared address.

PortaleItaly offers and supports multiple routes of submission, ensuring your petition is successful, whether you wish to apply on your own or have us handle everything from start to finish.
